WATCH: Art and Advocacy in Zambia: The Story of Kabwe

Kabwe, Zambia – A vibrant mural depicting children’s rights now graces a wall in Kabwe, Zambia, thanks to a group of young artists participating in the “Dialogue Works” campaign. This initiative, led by child rights organizations Kindernothilfe and Terres des Hommes, aims to amplify the voices of working children and ensure their participation in decisions that affect their lives.

We recently travelled to Kabwe to document the creation of this powerful artwork and capture the stories of the children involved. The resulting film, produced for Kindernothilfe, offers a glimpse into the lives of these young artists and highlights the importance of their participation in shaping a better future.

“Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child guarantees children the right to be heard,” explains Martin Bondzio a representative from Kindernothilfe. “Through ‘Dialogue Works,’ we’re providing a platform for working children to express their views and influence policies that impact them.”

The film follows Kabwe, a young artist who actively participates in the campaign. Viewers witness Kabwe’s daily life, including their work, their interactions with friends and family, and their passion for art. The creation of the mural, with its focus on Article 12, becomes a powerful symbol of Kabwe’s voice and their right to participate in decisions that affect their future.

“We want to ensure that children’s voices are not just heard, but truly listened to,” says Mulenga a representative from a Children’s Advisory Committee (CAC)]. “CACs provide a safe space for children to share their experiences, express their needs, and advocate for change.”

The “Dialogue Works” campaign, building on the success of its predecessor “It’s Time to Talk,” is making strides in anchoring the participation of working children in societal and political processes. By collaborating with CACs and empowering children like Kabwe, the campaign is helping to create a world where all children have a say in shaping their own destinies.

At the training, Opha harvested practical skills that served as an eye-opener as she went on to realize that one could succeed in commercial livestock farming using both natural and artificial feeds. Opha took her first step after the training by participating in the goat breeding scheme where she received James, the Boer goat. She also received training on pen fattening and keeping borsch chicken road runners whose projects have improved her standard of living.
